Each year in Muelheim, a town between Essen and Duisburg, in the Ruhr Industrial Area in Germany, a festival is organized by the local kite club, Drachenclub Muelheim Fantasy. I am still a loyal and enthusiastic member of this nice club with about 50 kite flyers. The festival is always excellently organized by the president Norbert Richter.
A number of local clubs participate in the event. One of them, the Drachenclub Fly-Off Walsum (Drachenclub = kite club), has a tremendous amount of nice kite makers with wonderful kites (current president is Klaus Kosche). Walsum is a part of Duisburg. A few of their kites can be seen here. Their banners are beautiful. Two extremely nice kites introduced at the kite festival by Joachim from Duisburg and Hans Walter Lauterbach are shown below. The Suruga kite, made by Joachim, is all done with applique technique. It is about 4 meters high and wide. A detail of this wonderful kite shows this and the big bamboo spars used in the frame much better. The kite on the right side, made by Hans Walter Lauterbach (a.k.a. HaWaLa), is about 3 by 3 meters large, also done in ripstop nylon and with applique technique.

Another picture of Joachim shows him with his wonderful train . Unfortunately their was nearly no wind that day.
A kite with an important message was shown there by a kite club from Dortmund. The Sentence "Wir ziehen alle an einer Leine" translates to: We all pull on one string. I really like that kite :-).

So, if you are in Germany and have some time in the summer, ask for the festival in Muelheim. It is a lot of fun!
