Founded 1996, by: Kai Griebenow, Peter Lee, and Thom Shanken,
to create "a standardized system of championship fighter kite
competition designed to enhance and promote the safe enjoyment of
fighter kites by the recreational and competitive kiting community,
and the general public at large."
Membership: Everyone is welcome to join the NAK. There is no membership fee. The group will finance itself from a $5.00 entry fee per competition and the selling of T-shirts, pins etc.
At present there is no President, Board of Directors, or anything like it. Decisions about the future of NAK, the events involved, rules, etc. are in the hands of the founders.
Competition Locations: As pointed out, we will promote fighter kite competitions in the Northeastern U.S. (thus: Northwest Atlantic Kitefighters) because that is where we live! At the present time we have no intention of increasing the number of festivals dramatically or the geographical location.
1.1. Demonstrate fighter kites to the public and FLY FIGHTER KITES.
1.2. Organize fighter kite flying as a competitive event and promote the idea of fighter kite flying in general.
1.3. Increase the public knowledge and awareness of what kite fighting is all about.
1.4. Build an organization that creates a friendly atmosphere for the exchange of ideas between all "Fighter Kite People".
1.5. Determine a yearly NAK Champion
A Link to a festival that is over will lead you to the results of that festival.
2.1. Results of the 1st Annual KONE Regional Kite Festival at Nahant Beach, Lynn, MA, April 20,21.
2.2. Boston Area Sport Kite Championship (BASKC) Results, Dartmouth, MA, June 7-9
2.3. Newport '96, Newport, RI, July 13,14
2.4. Seneca Lake Whale Watch
2.5. Adirondack Balloon Festival
These first five festivals are confirmed for this year. The event organizers are all in favor of adding fighter kites to their events. The Adirondack Balloon Festival, where kite flying will gain more and more importance soon (!) will have more than 100,000 potential spectators, and will be our last event, where the NAK Champion will be crowned. This will serve to expose fighter kites to the broadest audience possible.
The NAK founders are currently locating another kite festival to increase this year's planned competitions to six. The best three event competition results will be used to determine the NAK Champion. It is our hope that this "best three overall" approach will encourage participation from people who cannot travel to all of our scheduled events.
For our first year (1996) we will limit our interests to small fighter kites (Korean and Indian types) that can compete in one class. It should be a sufficient start. We will begin with line contact competition only. Cutting line fights may be included as demonstration events.
The NAK Competition Rules follow the AKA Rules in general (adapted and modified to enable easy competition). NAK Competition Rules will be availible to all flyers prior to each competition and will be explained by the Head Judge of each competitive event at its Pilot's Meeting. NAK Rules will also be posted on the net and in the rec.kites newsgroup.
Any interested flyer can receive a copy of the NAK Competition Rules by mailing a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the founders.
